Meeting Heaven
Since the fall of 1986, James Turrell’s Meeting, a site-specific installation at MoMA PS1, has been a quiet, meditative spot of wonder. A simple room has a rectangle cut out of the ceiling to view the sky, and orange lights glow just above the wooden seats.
In Turrell’s words, from MoMA Ps1’s website:
“There’s this four-square seating that’s inside, seating toward each other, having a space that created some silence, allowing something to develop slowly over time, particularly at sunset. Also, this Meeting has to do with the meeting of space that you’re in with the meeting of the space of the sky.”
As one who loves clouds and can’t stop staring at the sky, I just find this one of my favorite spots in New York City.

we had a similar experience at the finland pavilion at the shanghai world expo last summer! it looked like a big bowl from the outside (http://en.expo2010.cn/c/en_gj_tpl_23.htm) and inside it’s got a rounded hole, like a donut. you stand and look up there was a big round patch of sky framed by this curvy pure white form. it was so pretty. this is kind of what it looked like http://archrecord.construction.com/ar_china/2010/shanghai_world_expo/pavilions-5.asp but too big to fit into one photo 😦
